DisplayPort is a new image transmission interface used in the computer industry to replace the video graphics array (VGA) and digital Image Interface (DVI) for PERSONAL computer (PC) applications and replace the high resolution multimedia interface (HDMI).
DisplayPort has many advantages over the older interfaces. The AC Coupling and Low Voltage Swing design are compatible with the Submicron process and can be directly integrated into various image output components such as CPU, GPU and Application Processor. At the image signal receiving end, they can also be directly applied to the complicated and highly integrated Scalar and LCD Timing Controller (TCON) chips which also use the submicron process.
DisplayPort(including eDP) is the only image interface that USES packets to transmit image and sound information, so new features can be continuously added while maintaining good downward compatibility. DisplayPort(including eDP) is currently the best-performing display interface. It can transmit data of 60 frames per second and 30 bits of color on the panel with 4K resolution. It is also the only display interface that can drive several monitors through a Hub or Daisy Chain with only one output device (not supported by eDP). DisplayPort can also be used for a variety of external display adapters (Dongle), such as DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI. DisplayPort's standard connector consists of four pairs of differential signal lines, or four main channels, that use the main channel to transmit image data, and one, two, or four channels (lanes), depending on the amount of data displayed.
The image data of DisplayPort is transmitted in the form of micro-packets and given appropriate interval to adapt to Pixel Clock Rate. The Main channel also transmits CEA-861 InfoFrame Data, Audio Stream Sample Rate, Audio Streaming, Main Stream Attribute Data, Video Framing Rate, Monitor Timing Data and other Data packets.
